The first Co-Cathedral in Sri Lanka becomes the cathedral of the new diocese of Batticaloa

It was in 1893 the Trincomalee diocese was established and then in 1965 the Trinco-Batticaloa diocese was formed comprising Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara districts. For these combined ecclesiastical districts diocese, St. Mary’s Church was named as the Co-Cathedral; it became the first Co- Cathedral in the SriLankan church history. On the 03rd July 2012, in keeping with the decision of our Holy Father Benedict XVI, His Representative in Sri Lanka, His Excellency Most Rev.Dr Joseph Spitteri, declared Batticaloa as the new diocese, appointed Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Ponniah as the first Bishop of the Batticaloa Diocese and declared that the Co-Cathedral has been raised to the rank of Cathedral. The new Cathedral has the history of 204 years (1808-2012) At this juncture the condition of the church is very poor in and around. Therefore, the parishioners together with the Parish Priests have come forward to carry out the necessary preparations for this historical event which will be held on 23rd September 2012.
